Social Media Marketing: the town squares of tomorrow

Digital World and Social Media Marketing

What is Social Media Marketing and why is it important?

Social media marketing refers to the use of online social media platforms and websites to promote a product or service, as for example, Isaac’s Agency Facebook Page. See what we did there? The world is getting digitalised and almost everything has become based on technology. Therefore, social media marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media sites by the use of mobile and internet technology.

And why is important to know this? Because if you don’t have an effective social media marketing plan, you won’t see optimal results in the digital era.

You may still be wondering, why social media? Let’s go back to the drawing board. What is marketing? According to AMA, Marketing is the activity and process for creating; communicating and delivering offerings that have value to customers. Now look at social media marketing.  Social Media Today argue that the purpose of social media marketing is to build a brand and increase a brand’s visibility, through building relationships and communicating with potential customers. The two seem to go hand-in-hand.

Social Media and Social Networking Sites

Facebook is the biggest and arguably most powerful social networking site with 1.55 billion active monthly users. Regardless if you are a startup or a big company, you need to be on Facebook to “engage with your customers” and make use of this giant.

Twitter is known as the ‘‘in the moment’’ platform and boasts a respectful 255 million active monthly users. Twitter is the perfect online marketing tool to reach out to people.  The key is to be quick and smart.

Instagram is a visual platform designed for customers to post, share, comment and engage through digital media. As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

LinkedIn is regarded as the professional social networking site. LinkedIn largely focuses on b2b marketing rather than b2c.

YouTube is one of the fastest growing social sites in 21st century with billions of users every month. YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine and third most visited site after Google and Facebook. The platform has over 1.9bn logged in monthly users.

But the grass is not always green. Google+, one of the biggest sites has suffered a downfall because of another data leak and Google has decided to shut down the consumer version of the social network four months earlier than it originally planned which means Google+ will now close to consumers in April, rather than August.
